NL East Pennant Race: Game 1 Recap

First things first,

Second of all, BAM!

Okay now that we got that out of the way. What a way to start the biggest series of the season with a massive come from behind win. The Mets got off to a hot start jumping out to an early 3-0 lead heading into the bottom of the 4th, but then the inevitable Jon Niese implosion.

I feel like I just had this conversation with Jonny in my last blog. You couldn’t have picked a worse time to implode my friend. He’s done. Death, taxes, and 5 run innings from Jon Niese are the only certainties in life at this moment. The good news is all this Jon Niese hatred for today may have made people forget about the Matt Harvey situation for now. Maybe this 6 man rotation will be a beautiful thing because the less I have to see of Jon Niese in these remaining 26 games, the better. You just can’t expect to pitch 3.1 innings in the biggest game of your career, and then see time in October if the Mets are so lucky.

Down 5-3 to the Nationals in Washington going into the 5th seems like a pretty daunting task, but not for this Mets offense. There was a time not so long ago when the Mets couldn’t muster up more than 2 or 3 runs in a 5 game period. Flash forward a few months and lets take a look at how the Mets offense has been since July 25th.

Just an absolute Bizzaro world turn around. This team has been mashing the ball. The catalyst behind that? None other than the freshly acquire Yoenis Cespedes. Pay that man his money. Immediately. I don’t care what it takes, empty the banks. If I were the Wilpons i would have started the check on fire with how fast my hand was moving writing all those extra 0’s to Mr. Cespedes, but they won’t sign him because they hate fun and happiness. Nonetheless another massive day at the plate for Yoenis as he goes 3-4 with two doubles and a homer. The month of September has been real kind to Yoenis too as he is 13-27, 5 HR, 8 RBI, 11R, BB.

David Wright. I love you. I love you. I love you. Wright was having himself a stinky day at the plate as he was 0-3 going into the top of the 7th, but its not about quantity at this point, its about quality, and You couldn’t have had a more clutch AB than David Wright did in that inning. David Wright drove in the go ahead run in the top of the 7th to give the Mets the lead and then was brought home by Yoenis following that.

I truly believe David Wright would die for this team.

The Mets were also able to get some bullpen help finally, especially from Hansel Robles. That Hansel is so hot right now. Hansel came in for the performance of the year with 6 batters faced, 4 strikeouts, 2 groundballs. The bullpen did really have themselves a day coming in for the battered Jon Niese, it was just all highlighted by the Hansel Robles show. Juerys Familia comes in for the save. Lather, rinse, repeat.

All and all, a massive win. One of the most exciting games of the year if you’re a Mets fan. 5 game division lead. Now Matt Harvey comes in for the biggest game of his career as well, not only the biggest, but probably the game where he will have the most attention looking his way. Can’t focus on that, just gotta pitch his game, and get this team the win. Hey Bryce baby, we’ll see you tomorrow big boy.
